Backhouse | New Zealand
After sixty years, Backhouse still exists as a Wellington based family furniture business. It was founded in 1948 by Joe Backhouse.
Backhouse was responsible for some of the most stunning early modern furniture in New Zealand. With talented in-house designers such as Olaf Svendsen and licenses to produce iconic Danish designs it offered high end furniture of the utmost standard.
Backhouse was one of the first New Zealand furniture manufacturers to produce original Scandinavian designs under license. This allowed a new appreciation for the work of Juhl, Hvidt and Grete Jalk.
The company has always had a strong reputation for innovation. Backhouse was one of the few local furniture makers of the day to use teak. Today, their range sits comfortably alongside some of the best pieces from around the world.
