Best Of 2013

Here are our favorite things of 2013: something to watch, read, drink, eat, buy and take a seat in.

VISIT / Gibb's Farm is home to an impressive collection of even more impressive sculptural works set in an epic landscape north of Auckland. We'd waited for months for our chance to go but on December 5 the forecast was for plenty of rain. We loved it anyway, visiting the sculptures with soggy feet and no way to take a photo. We highly recommended you book in to see the 20+ artworks from the likes of Richard Serra, Bernar Venet and Neil Dawson. The beautiful manicured hillsides are also home to a host of exotic animals. We even fed a giraffe! TREND / Luxe interiors are a trend we are loving. Baz Luhrman's 'The Great Gatsby' is filled with textiles from his clever partner Catherine Martin's work with Mokum Textiles. The Sugar Club continues the deco inspired, luxe trend with copper finishes, patterned screens and glamourous fittings. We've found two examples, old and new which illustrate the trend. Paul McCobb's Wall unit in lacquered black and brass is an impressive piece we'd love to have, also this decadent chandelier from Hudson Furniture. EAT / One venue high on our must-go list for 2014 is The Sugar Club at the top of Auckland's Sky Tower. Along with Orphan's Kitchen which is the complete opposite in interiors styling, a more local and raw-natural feel. We're told both are a wonderful experience in cuisine. WATCH / Our pick for the best blockbuster of the year is 'Gravity' by Alfonso Cuaron. It's been a huge hit, especially in 3D, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Closely followed by 'Elysium' from Neill Blomkamp, who was also behind 'District 9'. Both would be great on DVD if you need a rainy day option these holidays. NEW DESIGNS / We're impressed by the long list of fantastic young homegrown designers making their mark including David Moreland. These pendants were selected by Katie Lockhart for the new Karen Walker store fitout in Ponsonby. We love them too. We'd also love to hand a 'Stealth Lamp' by Aarevalo in our space. VINTAGE FAVOURITES / We're hooked on the artful designs from mid century Brazil and Italy. One memorable piece is the 'Esfera Chair' by Ricardo Fasanello. We've also taken a liking to the glassware by Antonio da Ros, beautifully filled with life and organic movement. Then of course we can't forget our Jon Jansen 'Contour Chair' which sold at Webb's during the October Modern Design Sale. READ / 'Modern', edited by Jeremy Hansen is definitely our favourite book published this year. We are lucky enough to have visited several of the homes featured. We've sold out at the moment but more copies are due in the new year.
