Hans Bølling Ducklings for Architectmade
A handcrafted Danish Icon.
Hans Bølling created his iconic Duck and Duckling as a playful tribute to a story in his local newspaper. In 1959 a family of ducks waddled into traffic on a busy Copenhagen street during rush hour. This prompted a policeman to immediately stop all cars and pedestrians so the ducks could cross unharmed.
Hans Bølling’s work is known for its play, humor and wit. After training as an advertising designer, Bølling’s interest in architecture drew him back to school for a second degree. Early in his new career he began to craft small figures as gifts for family and friends. The precision and personality in his objects paved the way for success as he quickly began to sell the wooden figures to stores.
As luck would have it, Bølling won an award for his designs and invested the winnings into his own carpentry machine. This kick-started the production of Bølling’s now-famous Duck and Duckling. Each piece is handcrafted from teak and features smooth, rounded forms and exaggerated beaks. They are very cute and elegant, making them a charming addition to a desktop or display area.
