Rare Achille Castiglioni 'Grip' Lamp for Flos
A future design classic.
Achille Castiglioni was born in 1918 and is today considered a godfather of modern Italian design. His work is included in the permanent collections of museums all around the world, including 14 pieces at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Castiglioni has also won nine Compasso d′Oro awards, including a special mention as an individual dedicated to industrial design who, by means of his incomparable experience, “elevated industrial design to the highest levels of culture,” in 1989.
The 'Grip' floor lamp is a stunning example of Castiglioni's work. It was designed in 1985 for the pioneering contemporary Italian lighting company Flos. It is a very rare offering with a distinctive form reminiscent of a microphone on a slender stand. Lacquered metal with memorable coloured detail are combined with a rubber grip used to direct the light and as a switch.
