Description

In the late 1940s and early 50s progressive architects and designers experimented with new timbers and forms that would distinguish their work from the dark, heavy set furniture of prior generations. Radiata Pine was one of the first timbers to be embraced in this search for a truly modern material for the forward focused New Zealander.

Auckland based furniture store Jon Jansen was at the forefront of the drive to define a truly modern New Zealand aesthetic. Unfortunately the pine furniture produced by Jon Jansen did not gain commercial success and was quickly dropped for other timbers. It was however, the beginning of many experiments that would lead to the store becoming a leader in progressive design throughout the country.

This highly memorable organic coffee table is one of our favourite Jon Jansen designs. We love it even more for the ambitious use of pine, the only example in this timber we have come across. Three tapered legs rise through circular openings to elevate an organic glass table top, leaving space for a fourth leg which terminates at the tip of the diamond shaped base.

Note: We are constantly rotating our stock and not all items are on display at once. Please email us if there is a specific piece you would like to view and we’ll make sure it’s in the gallery.
