Peter Hvidt 'Minerva' Sofa by Backhouse
A stunning Danish design produced right here in New Zealand
The 'Minerva' sofa by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen was one of the groundbreaking mid-century Danish designs. It was crafted by France & Son and conceived as part of a larger modular family that included coffee tables and sofas of various lengths with optional armrests and backs. The pieces could be combined into L-shaped seating arrangements that suited open plan living, pushing the boundaries of contemporary interiors.
From the late 1950's onward, strict import duties were implemented in New Zealand and Danish made furniture was all but banned from entering the country. Fortunately for design loving Kiwis, premium furniture maker Joe Backhouse loved Scandinavian design. He would visit Denmark to stay on top of the latest production techniques and designs. On his return Backhouse would locally produce small quantities of his favourite pieces which would be sold through high-end department stores.
