During the mid 20th century John Tabraham was at the forefront of modern design in South Africa. In the 1950s he worked closely with high end furniture maker D.S Vorster designing contemporary furniture defined by clean lines and simple, elegant forms.

In the 1960s and 70s, Tabraham is most recognised for his work with furniture maker Kallenbach. His designs have an organic warmth that takes queues from the prevalent Danish modern style. The furniture was aimed at the top of the market and sold through exclusive stores like Prosperitas in Pretoria.

The annually published international design reference "Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook", later compiled and re-released by Taschen as "Decorative Art 1950s" showcases four of Tabraham's designs for D.S Vorster & Co, which hold their own alongside the best in the world.
