Toothill was founded by Reg Toothill in Newton Aycliffe after the 2nd World War. The business was originally focused on making loose covers for existing sofas. Wartime and Post War restrictions greatly limited production of new furniture and even in the early 1950's it was extremely difficult for new manufacturers to make furniture. Raw material like wood was severely rationed and only available to larger makers.

By the 1960's Toothill was focusing on producing contemporary furniture as well as cabinetry and interior fit-outs. Unlike other furniture makers of the era that focused on teak, Toothill prefered the darker afromosia timber for their frames and detailing. During this time the company crafted some of the most iconic British furniture which included a memorable daybed with adjustable side tables called the 'Wentworth'.

As Toothill was a smaller producer, their work is rare and harder to find than that of other British makers. This has made Toothill furniture highly collectible and sought after.
