J.W. Backhouse is one of New Zealand's furniture design and manufacturing success stories of the mid-century era. Its small, plastic wiro bound catalogue of the time showcases an enviable series of office fitouts for clients like the Reserve Bank, the Dairy Board, Shell and Qantas which commissioned customised interiors for their front of house and internal spaces.
The very first piece of Backhouse furniture we can remember selling was in about 2007. It was a super high end teak desk, with a top drawer which was fitted with four circular wells for paperclips and other small office objects. We continue to be impressed with the quality of design and cabinetry that Backhouse pieces represent – many made from teak and a few from rosewood. All possess the same kind of attention to detail and craftsmanship standard which attracted the blue chip corporate buyer and a discerning residential audience.
Currently we are pleased to have storage pieces, coffee tables and armchairs for sale from Backhouse, with more designs which are being restored. Let us know if you are considering any of these designs or if we can help you to source a special piece.
