Atomic Max Stout 'Paddle Arm' Sofa for High Point Blacksmith Co
Max Stout is one of the unsung heroes of American mid-century modernism. During the 1950s, Stout designed for a number of North Carolina furniture makers and also a prominent New York distributor. His work is highly memorable and he is considered an originator of the wood-iron-upholstery combination in casual furniture, a style that influenced a number of other more well-known designers.
This atomic style sofa with its striking lines in black iron is a modern masterpiece. The frame has a lightness of form not possible with traditional wooden craftsmanship. Stout describes the sofa in a 1961 interview as having "Iron for durability, plus wood for warmth". It's a rare and collectable example of the progressive and often playful designs produced in post war United States.
