Bold Gerhardt Meyer 'Binnehuis' Sideboard by E.E. Meyer
Some of South Africa’s most premium mid-century furniture was produced by the cabinetmaking firm E.E. Meyer for the high-end ‘Binnehuis’ stores. This graphic sideboard with a bold linear form is no exception, it’s a striking piece defined by faceted angles set in rich cuts of solid Imbuia (African Walnut).
E.E. Meyer was directed by Gerhardt Meyer from 1966 and he is believed to be the designer of the furniture produced during the mid to late 20th century. Meyer’s designs were known for their generous use of solid exotic timber, unique forms, and premium cabinetry.
The ‘Binnehuis’ furniture stores were owned by Mr and Mrs van Ewijck, a Dutch couple who frequently travelled between the Netherlands and South Africa. Their stores were in many prominent South African locations including Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
