Bold Neal Smith Prototype Chaise for Metaform Design Competition
Accomplished New Zealand designer Neal Smith is known for his minimal, clean aesthetic and proficient work with progressive wood based materials. Smith has focused on occupying a space between mass production and individual handcrafting, creating unique designs for leading architects and high-profile clients.
This prototype recliner was designed as an entry into the Carter Holt Harvey 2003 Metaform design competition. The goal was to demonstrate and promote the use of hardened NZ Pinus Radiata, a process of infusing cellulose into pine under pressure. Hardened pine is significantly denser and stronger than normal pine, hence the opportunity was taken to maximise the cantilevers of the recliner to showcase these qualities.
Recently Neal Smith's iconic 1989 designed 'RYB' Chair was included in the Objectspace exhibition 'The Chair: A Story of Design and Making in Aotearoa' curated by Kim Paton. The image is taken from the accompanying book designed by Inhouse.
