Rare Peder Hansen Safari Chair by Taraire Crafts
This late 1960s Safari Chair is an exceptionally rare find from an important mid-century New Zealand designer. Danish born designer Peder Hansen's work was being shown at design awards shows and exhibitions at the time.
This Safari Chair is has a simple, graphic shape frame, finished by beautifully aged saddle leather wrapped around the Tawa frame. It's a low, relaxed feeling piece that introduces character to a lounge or bedroom space.
Te Papa represents Peder Hansen's work with the Model 304 Safari Easy Chair, which was recently included in the 2024 Objectspace exhibition 'The Chair'. It toured New Zealand for five months for the Rothman's Industrial Design Awards in 1968 and then became available for sale through premium design stores for just over a decade.
