Rare Sven Ivar Dysthe 1001 Series Sofa by Dokka Mobler
Designed for the 1001 series for Dokka Møbler in Norway by Sven Ivar Dysthe in 1959, this sofa still feels cutting edge and contemporary. With a rosewood frame coupled with steel legs and hardware, the floating sofa and inset cushions are to be admired from every angle. The 1001 series is a concept of minimal, premium timber combined with steel and applied to a collection of objects which exhibit the same details and minimal flourish.
Sven Ivar Dysthe (1931 – 2020) is one of the most important Norwegian designers in the mid-century period. He trained as a carpenter and later at the Royal College of Art in London. During his studies he was selected to create a pincushion box to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. As a graduate he was hired by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen and took on more of an understanding of Danish modernism which he incorporated with his own experimental, high production approach to design.
