Light and graphic, these iconic dining chairs are the work of innovative Italian designer Gio Ponti. On their release in 1952, these elegant chairs had a form which was rare to see, an extreme lightness and honesty of materials that perfectly aligned with the post-war design direction.

The Italian word 'Leggera' translates to 'Light' in English. The design was developed in an executive partnership between Gio Ponti, Cesare Cassina and his master craftsmen to create the lightest chair possible without compromising the structure. The timber frame offers comfort and character with angular details and deceptively simple lines.

Gio Ponti's work is included in several international museum collections and has a characteristic sculptural, Italian look with exaggerated forms and surprising design features. His designs are memorable and unique, forming an impressive body of work which remains a collector favourite.

These chairs have achieved a highly collectable status and are a rare find on the resale market. They have been offered to us on consignment and are likely the first vintage set available for sale in New Zealand.
