Four Sharp Andrew Patterson 'Outdoor Dining Chairs' by Michael Draper Design
The 'Outdoor Dining Chair' was commissioned in 1993 to furnish a Ponsonby home by award winning architect Andrew Patterson. To realise the design, Patterson collaborated with celebrated local furniture designer and manufacturer Michael Draper.
Steel was Draper's material of choice and with Patterson he found a partner not shy about pushing its structural limit. The result is a chair with an elegant pencil-thin profile, like a line drawing rendered in steel. Don't be deceived by the sophisticated lightness of form, this is a rigid object made to perfectly weather New Zealand's harsh outdoor environment.
This memorable chair is considered a significant example of progressive New Zealand design from the 1990s. It was one of only 110 chairs included in the Objectspace exhibition 'The Chair – A story of design and making in Aotearoa'.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
