Highly Progressive G.A Jenkins 'Linden' Armchair by Packet Furniture
A standout example of early British modernism, the progressive and highly celebrated 'Linden' armchair from The Packet Furniture Co. marks a high point in post-war British design. The design is utilitarian and understated yet possesses a refined elegance. The use of steam bent plywood in the frame gives the arms a memorable ribbon like lightness which also allowed mass production at a cost that was affordable during the post-war rebuilding of the country.
This 1948 design by G.A Jenkins builds on an earlier 1946 version by world-renown architect Eric Lyons. Jenkins' version features a much more curvaceous frame and possesses an enthusiasm and optimism not evident in the earlier more austere version. An example of this chair with a slight variation to the backrest can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum of Art and Design in London. It's a rare and memorable example of post-war design that is also very comfortable and bound to make a statement in any contemporary home today.
