Pair Of Highly Sculptural French Chairs By Maurice Pre
French furniture maker and interior designer Maurice Pre (1907 – 1988) was a prominent and influential member of the Modernist design scene in post-war France. His legacy spans the contrasting styles of lavish Art Deco design and the rational functionalism of the modernist era.
Maurice Pre attended the distinguished École Boulle school of applied art in 1924 before starting an apprenticeship with Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, a master craftsman known for making glamorous Art Deco furniture for the French elite. It was there that Pre met his wife Janette Laverriére, an architect who had attended the Bauhaus in Germany.
These sculptural dining chairs were produced in France in the 1950s. They are a beautiful example of Pré's ability to design architectural pieces in a modernist form that hint at the decadence and flourish of the Art Deco movement.
