Pair of Rare 'No.8 Wire' Bar Stools by Marilyn Sainty
Marilyn Sainty is one of the matriarchs of New Zealand fashion. From humble beginnings she rose to become one of this country's most revered fashion designers, her work has been the subject of exhibitions as well as books. Sainty is also known for her highly successful fashion boutique Scotties.
In the 1980s, Sainty created a small number of avant-garde furniture designs, motivated by her participation in Artiture, a progressive furniture exhibition by leading New Zealand artists, architects and designers. Sainty's memorable furniture has since been included in art and design exhibitions both locally and internationally.
These rare stools were inspired by an old chair Sainty noticed that had been repaired with wire to stabilise the legs. Number 8 wire has been the classic kiwi solution to almost any problem for generations, whether it was needed or not. These sophisticated stools give the humble material a cheeky, ironic reference.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
