Pair of Rare NZ Made Mid-Century Modern Armchairs
This rare, locally made pair of oak armchairs are a great example of the organic, post-war aesthetic that modernist designers embraced in the late 1940s and early 50s. It's a style defined by elegant curves and a lightness of form that was in stark contrast to the heavyset deco style of the previous decade.
The design shares similarities with Grant Featherston's 'Relaxation' Series from 1948, and with the work of other progressive international designers like Russell Wright from the United States. A sleek highly curved frame of rich oak supports an equally curvaceous floating seat. The unique design and inspired lightness of form combine to create a desirable classic.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
