Viking Furniture
Viking Furniture
New Zealand
c1950s - 1980s

Viking Furniture was originally produced by Danish Furniture Craft Ltd. The company was based in Christchurch and was initially an importer of Danish flat-pack furniture. High import duties introduced in the 1950s meant switching to Danish and Dutch immigrant craftsmen to locally produce their own simple, wooden-framed lounge seating.

Viking furniture is graceful from every angle. The viking trademark style incorporates low seat backs with slender arms stretching well beyond cigar shaped legs and often arched front rail. More than any other mid-century "show wood" chair produced in this country, Viking furniture best replicates the Scandinavian look. Think Hans Wegner, Grete Jalk or Finn Juhl.

By the 1960's a number of larger competing companies had started to sell furniture in the highly popular Scandinavian style. Due to the increased competition Danish Furniture Craft Ltd filed for voluntary liquidation in 1963. The rights to produce the Viking range were then acquired by Wellington firm B.L Hart (who also produced the popular range of Vono Furniture).

Today Viking furniture is highly sought after by mid-century enthusiasts and contemporary furniture lovers alike. The designs are just as timeless as the day they were first produced.
