Rare Robert Charroy French Desk By Mobilor
In 1954 in Antony, near Paris, a large new University social housing development was being completed on a 10 hectare site, the Jean-Zay University Residence. It was conceived as a model city with pools, accommodation, shops, lecture halls, a library, sports centre. Design contributions were invited for furniture to complete the interiors. This desk was selected for the project which was along with pieces by Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and lighting from Serge Mouille. Sadly the utopian dream was never realised and recently many of the buildings have been demolished.
Mobilor had a history of design with tubular steel and timber furniture which was developed further by Robert Charroy in the early 1950s. This desk features a distinctive, sculptural steel tube frame wrapped around an oak cabinet. A curved desk top is cut around the drawer shape and gives balance to the form. Overall this piece feels imaginative and original, a very unique piece with incredible design history that will look great in any contemporary home or office.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
