Sleek Howard Keith Armchair and Ottoman for Jon Jansen
During the 1950s the groundbreaking furniture store Jon Jansen was paving the way for contemporary design in New Zealand. To ensure a reputation at the cutting edge, the store stocked a range of international pieces from some of the most progressive furniture makers.
This offering from British furniture maker Howard Keith perfectly captures the progressive postwar aesthetic. With its refined, graphic lines in vibrant mahogany and elegant lightness of form this stunning armchair was quickly embraced by style conscious New Zealanders.
The use of mahogany in the show-wood arms and legs indicates that these chairs were likely produced under license in New Zealand by the Jon Jansen workshop rather than imported from the UK.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
