Iconic Warren Platner 'Platner' Dining Table by Knoll
Modernism became more expressive during the 1960s, reflecting a dramatic shift in cultural values. American designer Warren Platner felt there was room for the kind of decorative, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV. To pursue that concept, he focused on the design possibilities of steel wire and ultimately arrived at a collection of chairs, ottomans and tables that rest on a sculptural base of nickel-plated steel rods.
In 1966 the Platner Collection captured the "decorative, gentle, graceful" shapes that were beginning to infiltrate the modern vocabulary. The pieces are created by welding hundreds of curved, nickel-plated steel rods to circular frames, simultaneously serving as structure and ornament. This dining table table is a coveted mid-century classic that is just as elegant today as the day it was conceived.
